SIZE AND LOCATION

Costa Rica is located in Central America, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the West and the Atlantic Ocean (Caribbean Sea) to the East, Nicaragua to the North and Panamá to the South. It’s territory is only 19,652 square miles (51,100 km2).

GEOGRAPHIC DIVISION

Costa Rica is divided into seven provinces: Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Limón, Puntarenas, & San José. Although small, each province offers exciting destinations including endless rainforests, beaches, volcanoes, rivers, and an extensive national park system.

POPULATION

As of 2016, Costa Rica has approximately 4.8 million inhabitants. More than 60% live in the Central Valley, which consists of four provinces: San José, Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago.

GDP / GDP PER CAPITA

Costa Rica’s GDP (2013) is approximately US$49.6 billion. Its GDP per capita is US$14.344, one of the highest of the region.

WEATHER

Costa Rica has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 25º C / 75º F year round. Its rainy season starts in late April and ends around December. The dry season starts in December and ends in April.

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE

Spanish is the official language in Costa Rica. Other native languages (e.g.) Bribrí, Cabecar, Guaymí, and Maleku are only spoken by a small minority and mostly in indigenous and somewhat isolated reserves. English is widely spoken by many businessmen and women and service providers in San José, and by hotel/resort employees and clerks throughout the country.

LOCAL CURRENCY
